Same-drop charge change

Collect free-fall and field-on measurements. Charge is inferred continuously; no rounding to elementary-charge multiples is applied.

Your observations will appear here. Start with Run paired measurement.

CSV includes signed velocities, settings, timestamps, timing distances, inferred charge, laboratory mode, model version and replay run. The hidden charge is not exported. Uncertainties are model estimates, not a complete instrument calibration.

The model behind the instrument

01 / Which apparatus is this?

An educational reconstruction of a classroom realization of Millikan’s experiment, not Millikan’s 1909 or 1913 instrument. Documented: 60 mm brass plates, 7.62 mm nominal separation, 0.5 mm entry aperture, 0–500 V DC, 30× erect microscope, 0.1/0.5 mm reticle, 855 kg/m³ oil, 10 MΩ per plate lead. Chassis, fasteners, atomizer, lenses, cables and supply enclosure are reconstructed, not manufacturing CAD.

02 / Motion is calculated, not animated

Motion is calculated: a three-dimensional Langevin equation with buoyancy, Stokes drag with the Millikan slip correction (b = 8.2 × 10⁻³ Pa·m) and thermal diffusion, advanced by an exact correlated position–velocity Ornstein–Uhlenbeck update every 1/120 s with a reproducible seed. The supply is an RC circuit with microsecond relaxation. Drops touching an electrode are deposited, not recycled.

03 / Independent inference

The timing gate measures 0.50 mm between reticle lines with 0.4 μm RMS localization noise. Radius comes from the fall speed and charge from the signed field-on speed, voltage and chamber readings; results are not snapped to multiples of e. The one-sigma estimate propagates thermal and localization scatter, 0.1 V resolution and an assumed 10 μm spacer uncertainty; it is not a full systematic budget.

04 / Where this model stops

Central uniform field E = V/d: fringing, aperture perturbation, image forces, convection, evaporation and drop interactions are not solved. Gravity follows WGS 84 with a height correction; air density is p/(R·T) and viscosity follows Sutherland’s law. Integer charges generated with the SI value of e make this a synthetic test of a measurement method, not new evidence for quantization.
